How To Help Japan: Use Your Website To Promote Aid and Awareness

As you probably already know, Japan was hit by a devastating 8.9 earthquake yesterday. The earthquake and resulting tsunami have caused untold devastation, destabilized nuclear power plants and taken many lives.

One of our users, Melvin from Volcanic Web Design, updated his Hello Bar (a simple notification bar on the top of your website) to drive awareness for the Japan earthquake and promote donations to Red Cross.  He suggested that we allow anyone to post a Hello Bar on their website and do the same.

We’re in. If you want to participate, you have 2 options:

1. New Users – sign up for a Hello Bar account with the invite code “helpjapan” and create a Hello Bar with a message and link of your choice. Existing users – just simply update the message/link of your current Hello Bar.

2. If you don’t want to sign up for an account, you can simply paste the below code anywhere within the <body> tag of your website. This will display our default message to support Japan. You can remove the code at any time to remove the Hello Bar. Here are some tips for adding the code.

<script type="text/javascript" src="//www.hellobar.com/hellobar.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
new HelloBar(1,9126);
</script>

We will do our best to share the results of your collective efforts. Please comment if you have questions or other ideas.

    The bar is a great tool. I have been thinking of implementing something similar, but this one is perfect.

      Hi Slavi,
      This is to allow support of http and https. Is the omission causing any issues for you?

    I did like to put this on our site.

    I visited hellobar.com and didn’t find a sign up page to put in the invite code.

    Please can you post the url to the sign up page?

    Thanks.

    I’ve noticed this bar on Tim Ferris’s blog and am glad to see it’s available. I used the invite code and have put it on my blog to help with the donation efforts to Japan.

    The code doesn’t work even if I add a http. Any idea why? I am on Mac – FF or Chrome.

      Hi Sahil, are you still having this issue?

    Hi,

    I’d normally just copy and paste code without looking it too much :) and I’d expect it to work right away. Does “http:” get added automatically by the browsers ? if yes, wow I didn’t know that.
    There are 2 options: either add the protocol automatically or just link to the https version.
    It is up to you.

    Also your WordPress installation changes the quotes to different ones even though they look the same.

    Wow, I guess you’re experiencing growth problems. You’re victims of your own success.
    I have tried to make a custom bar (just got my account activated) but the server was loading very slowly. I will try again later.

    I’m confused.. the activate account page requires you actually be invited already? it doesn’t recognize the helpjapan invite code.

    The site I’m placing the bar for is not mine, doing for a friend, so I chose not to activate account but instead, just add the code snippet. However, it is does not appear. I placed it right under the opening body tag. Also viewed in firefox, chrome and ie and none show the bar. Am I doing something wrong?
