Google Feeds On Seconds

Just as the big acquisitions seem to occur each week, whether it’s Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and so on; another small technology company gets absorbed into one of the big three. Feedburner, the largest feed syndication service on the web with 67 million subscribers, is rumored to be acquired by Google for $100M. That’s small change compared to some of the multi-billion dollar deals that have gone down in the past few months. So what does this mean for Google, what could they possibly do with Feedburner? There are two ways to approach this, the serious business way and the obvious I’ve got too much time on my hands way, so let’s look at both shall we?

Smart Business Advantages

  1. Addition of tracking of 720,000 feeds into Google Analytics who just had a new release (behavioral data is good right?)
  2. The public release of Google Adsense into 720,000 feeds (more advertising dollars is good right?)
  3. An advanced advertising platform with the ability to target ads no only to various channels, but real behavioral targeting
  4. Another company that can’t be acquired by Microsoft or Yahoo
  5. Why not? They already own Blogger – blogs + RSS = good

Too Much Time Business Advantages

  1. Promotion – How about the little Feedburner chicklet that says “Powered By Google”?
  2. Why not buy up a podcasting network?
  3. Uhm…Customers include AOL, WSJ, Wired, Inc, FAST
  4. RSS will be a commodity
  5. Another website login added to your Google Accounts – go Identity 2.0
  6. It has a good traffic rank in Alexa: 318
  7. Ability to watermark all videos on Youtube for “feedburner” with Google logo
  8. One more place for Google to appear in Wikipedia
  9. More link popularity for Google’s homepage (seriously, does it really need anymore?)
  10. Reality TV: “Trick Your Feed” powered by Google

There are way more than this, but feel free to add your own in our comments section. This is obviously a great pickup for Google who continues to win the battle of market share in multiple markets.
