I registered to vote on MySpace!

Telepathy

Now you can actually say you spent the time on the world’s most popular website doing something productive!

80% of MySpace’s 114 million registered users are of voting age, according to News Corp. This new initiative that pairs the Social Networking giant with the “Declare Yourself” group aims to get more of (them) to the polls in November.

The new website’s message: “During the last mid-term election less than 30 of the people made the decisions for all of us. Get involved. Find out what’s happening in your state. Register. Vote.”

Although the message comes a little late, with only five weeks until the election, the cause is still admirable.

“Whether you care about health care, job opportunities, student loans, the environment, national security, or Iraq – and whatever your positions on those issues may be – politicians need to hear from you. The more you engage, the more of a difference you can make. The first step is to make your voice heard. It’s time to Declare Yourself by registering to vote, going to the polls, and making an impact.”

Getting people to register is one thing, getting them to the polls however is another. The future of more effective participation from this demographic really lies with the same strategy. The next step would be the ability to actually vote on a website like MySpace, Yahoo or Facebook.

Happy Voting!
