Moving On – Support for IE6 Dropped

Telepathy

Aaaaand we’re done.

After years of pulling out our hair writing specialized scripts and CSS for a browser thats older than the iPod, Windows XP, and even some sovereign nations – not to mention the immense security flaws that have plagued this application since its inception – digital-telepathy is finally dropping support for Internet Explorer 6. This is not to say that we won’t support those sites that we did program with Internet Explorer 6 in mind, we’re just not making accommodations for this antiquated browser on any new projects.

Cheers to that! I’m amazed when I check my G analytics to learn of all the IE6 users still out there.

i fully agree for _my_ projects. if a client is willing to pay for backwards compatibility, no matter how painful, i’ll take care of it.

Only when more agencies like you guys take a stand, will this monster die. Kudos!

I agree Matt, but its our belief here that we should also be creating awareness with our clients the drawbacks of supporting such an insecure and antiquated browser. If the client has a truly legitimate reason for supporting the browser (in the case of a B2B service where the client’s target audience may be tied to IE6 due to internal intranet limitations), the exception would have to be made.

I agree that IE 6 support has got to be ceased to entice people to upgrade.

However, since a portion of them don’t use IE 6 by choice but through their IT department policy and upgrade budget constrictions, it think tools like SlideDeck should provide in the script something like:
* a IE6 detector
* a space to write a message to IE6 users with a link to download a PDF equivalent so that they don’t miss out on content.
